Can someone help me out and give me some important requirements towards becoming a pastry chef. What schooling is involved, average amount of hours required, type of skills required, types of apprenticeship and etc.

It would be very helpful and greatly appreciated.

How can I become a pastry chef's apprentice?

I am interested in becoming a pastry chef’s apprentice but am uncertain of the process. Do I apply? Do I need to have prior formal training? If anyone has any insight I would greatly appreciate it!

I currently live in California and would like to complete the apprenticeship here, but am willing to relocate if necessary. Thanks!

What are the pros and cons of being a Chef?

I really have a passion to become a pastry chef, however, my mother is telling me it’s not the fantasy world I have built in my head. To be honest I didn’t even know it was a fantasy world lol. I would just like to know the pros and cons of becoming a Pastry chef, or any chef for that matter. And is there any way I could get hands on experience? Maybe to get a taste of what it’s like?
Thank you!!

Would you recommend becoming a pastry chef?

This is pretty much my dream. I love to bake, and making cakes & other things beautiful just appeals to me. I’m a talented baker, not to toot my own horn but I do make amazing desserts. I plan on getting a Bachelors in Baking & Pastry arts, after Graduating high school in 2012. Anyways, this is what I want to do. How ever some recent discussions/arguments with my parents have gotten me to wonder. I want my dream no less, mind you, but my dads trying to scare me shitless. Its not exactly working, but I do wish I had my parents support.

Becoming a pastry chef not what I expected?

Ok so i’ve been looking into becoming a pastry chef, I have awesome grades and I will be graduating within two years but I do not have the resources (money-wise) to attend a college or a university. The school I attend (which happens to be the number one school in America, TAG Magnet) paves a way to obtain scholarships.
I was looking through other Q&A and I realized people say going into a Culinary Institute or School right out of high school isn’t the best way to go.
Why is that?
Should I take the scholarships if I get them to go to my dream school (Culinary Institute of America)?
Should I even persue the scholarships or should I go into a community college right out of high school?

Please feel free to give me any advice.

Is pursuing a career as a pastry chef the wrong choice for me?

I currently am going to college to get a degree in management because I would like to own my own bakery someday. My plan when I graduate was to try to become a manager of a bakery or restaurant first and then when I have enough money to open my own bakery, then I would pursue that dream. Lately, I have been feeling like I am in the wrong place though, like I should be going to culinary school instead of business school. I just feel out of place. I am starting to consider finishing this year out then maybe applying to a culinary school of my choice to become a pastry chef and then later on in life maybe owning my own bakery. I have some concerns though. I really would like to have a family someday and though I would like to wait till I am out of school and have a job, it is not something that I want to put off for a very long time. I’m afraid if I become a pastry chef that I won’t have anytime to have a family or to be there for them. Another thing that I am concerned about is that I tend to be a tad bit shy. I have become a little more outgoing but I am still afraid that I will get walked all over in the food industry because of my shy tendencies. It is something that I am willing to work at though because I really do enjoy baking and challenging myself in that area. Should I use my love for baking to pursue a career as a pastry chef or does it just seem that this love should just remain a hobby? (I know becoming a pastry chef is ultimately my decision)
